Stop using Chrome.

You are trading your entire browsing history for a memory-hogging monopoly. It's time to switch.

The Chromium Monoculture

Nearly every major browser today—Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera—is built on Chromium. Google dictates the web standards. When Google decides to push "Privacy Sandbox" (Topics API) or cripple ad blockers with Manifest V3, the rest of the web is forced to follow.

Monopolies are bad for security, bad for privacy, and bad for innovation.

"We are building an ecosystem where Google is the sole arbiter of what constitutes a 'safe' web, and they fund it through the largest advertising network on earth."

The State of Browsers (2024)

We test defaults, telemetry, engine independence, and company business models. No affiliate links.

Browser Engine Telemetry (Default) Ad-blocker Built-in Our Verdict
Firefox Gecko Opt-out No (needs uBO) The Necessary Alternative
Brave Chromium Opt-in Excellent Best for Normal Users
Mullvad Browser Gecko None uBO Pre-installed Best for Anti-Fingerprinting
Safari WebKit Tied to OS Basic (ITP) Fine, but Apple-locked
Google Chrome Chromium Aggressive Manifest V3 Do Not Use

What they call "Telemetry"

Browsers collect diagnostics to "improve the product". In reality, this often means unique identifiers tied to your IP, browsing habits, and OS configuration.

  • Chrome: Syncs browsing history, bookmarks, and passwords to Google by default if signed in. Topics API tracks your interests locally to serve ads.
  • Edge: Sends your browsing history to Microsoft by default ("Help improve Microsoft products by sending info about websites you visit").
  • Firefox: Collects interaction data and hardware specs by default. Easily disabled, but should be opt-in.

The Manifest V3 Disaster

Google's Manifest V3 extension platform limits the declarativeNetRequest API, fundamentally crippling how uBlock Origin and other dynamic ad blockers function. They claim it's for security. The reality is that Google is an ad company protecting its revenue stream.

You are more than your cookies

1. Third-Party Cookies

The old way. Trackers place a file on your machine. Easily blocked by Safari's ITP, Firefox's ETP, and Brave's Shields. Chrome is delaying blocking them (again).

Test Cookie Blocking

2. Canvas Fingerprinting

Scripts render a hidden 3D/2D image using your GPU/driver stack and hash the result. Highly unique. Brave randomizes this. Firefox resists it (if configured).

3. Font & Hardware Parsing

Sites enumerate your installed fonts, screen resolution, audio context, and CPU concurrency to build a profile without storing anything on your disk.

$50B+

Estimated annual revenue Google derives from search traffic flowing through default Chrome installations.

~400MB

Base RAM usage of an empty Chrome instance, compared to ~250MB for an optimized Gecko build.

Independent browser engine remaining with significant market share (Gecko/Firefox).

How we evaluate

We don't care about "seamless integration" or AI sidebars. We care about architectural privacy.

  • Out-of-the-box defaults: 95% of users never change settings. Defaults matter.
  • Network analysis: We proxy the browser on first launch and monitor all outbound requests.
  • Engine diversity: We heavily penalize Chromium-based browsers for contributing to Google's web monopoly.
  • Business model: If the company makes money selling ads (Google, Microsoft), their privacy claims are fundamentally conflicted.

No Affiliate Links

Every VPN review site is an affiliate farm. Most browser "top 10" lists are written by AI and rank based on whoever pays per install.

We make $0 from your browser choice. This site is statically generated, hosts no trackers, and exists solely to combat the deterioration of the open web.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't Edge better than Chrome?

No. Microsoft Edge has more bloatware (shopping features, AI integrations) and sends your browsing history to Microsoft by default. It's built on Chromium, so it does not help web diversity.

What about DuckDuckGo browser?

It's decent on mobile, but on desktop, it uses the OS-provided webview (WebKit on macOS, WebView2/Chromium on Windows). It's essentially a privacy shell over existing engines.

Is Tor Browser for daily use?

No. Tor routes traffic through three nodes, making it slow. Cloudflare and CDNs will constantly hit you with CAPTCHAs. Use Tor for anonymity, use Mullvad or hardened Firefox for daily privacy.

Why recommend Firefox when Mozilla is failing?

Mozilla management has issues (high executive pay, focus on AI), but the Gecko engine is the only viable alternative to Chromium. Supporting the engine is critical for web standards.
